2015-03-02 Datr Zuril: Please see comments to t121034. Please could you clarify the criteria used for "There is a better move" and "Correct" on the last move. Also, it would be useful to know you views on the truncation idea proposed by Pawncow.
2015-03-02 Mabor > If a problem has the same ELO as you and you solve it you get no points.
&
> you solve a problem which is below your ELO then you only get a few points

seems not so well balanced... if I get some points for solving a problem weaker than me I should get at least the same points for solving a problem not weaker than me. But I think it's so: if I solve a problem I always get at least 2 points :-)
2015-02-28 Garykevinware If playing like a human was a desirable trait, then computers would offer no improvement.
2015-02-28 Datr Zuril: I have recently downloaded Stockfish 6 onto my laptop and first impressions are very impressive. I would recommend that you have a look at it and consider using it as the site engine. It appears to be much faster than Houdini and plays a more human style.
2015-02-27 Datr Zuril: Lajos is correct M63513 needs deleting.
2015-02-26 Datr If a problem has the same ELO as you and you solve it you get no points.
If you solve a problem which has a higher ELO than you, you get a lot of points.
If you solve a problem which is below your ELO then you only get a few points, since you are expected to solve it, just like you are expected to beat a weaker player.
If you fail a problem with a higher ELO you only lose a few points.
If you fail a problem with a lower ELO you lose a lot of points, because you were expected to solve it.

Hope this helps.
2015-02-24 Bellofiore Perchè i punti elo tolti se sbaglio un problema sono molto più alti rispetto ai punti guadagnati se il problema lo risolvo ?
2015-02-22 Bopgirl I just played another game, and the same thing happened - when the black pawn promoted, it turned white.
2015-02-22 Bopgirl I was just playing white on the Valvolo setting, and a black pawn promoted to a white rook. What gives?
2015-02-10 Datr Two things.
1. Have you the latest version of Java. Mine is Version 8 Update 31.
2. You can't type directly into the Exemption Box, you have to click the Edit button on the right of the box, did you do that?

Also, be aware that there is still a security risk, according to Java, if you add http sites to the list, they recommend using https sites, but of course Ideachess isn't https, that is the problem I believe.
2015-02-10 Bopgirl I tried these steps, but my computer wouldn't let me put anything in the "Exception Site List" window. Is this a problem with my particular computer, do you think? Thanks -
2015-02-07 Pawncow I just completed the Java security settings on a Windows 7 computer and here is the way I did it:
Step 1: Open Windows control panel (using Windows Start menu)
Step 2: Open the Java control panel ( click on the Java icon in the Windows control panel)
Step 3: Click the security Tab on the Java control panel
Step 4: In the "Exception Site List" window type, http://www.ideachess.com ,and click OK in bottom of window.
Finally run the program and when Java starts, click OK to run.
2015-02-07 Datr Zuril: The site administrator provided this info the last time this question was asked.

Workaround for java applet security: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/java_blocked.xml

Try this, if it doesn't work post another comment and Zuril will help you.

I have the same problem,I believe it is because this site is http and not https, https are more secure sites.
2015-02-07 Bopgirl Hi -

I just joined this site tonight. I tried to play a computer game, but was told that "java needed my permission to play".
I've played chess games at other sites, obviously with java installed. Can you help me here? Thanks.
2015-02-07 Datr Zuril: There has been a recent discussion about the evaluation criteria for tactics problems, please could you advise on the location of this information. We would like to now the criteria for:

1, What makes a move Wrong, mid solution
2. What makes it "There is a better move"
3. What makes a move Correct on the last move
2015-02-06 Datr Zuril: Checkmate NR 31023, is labelled as a Mate in 3, but it is actually a Mate in 4, so needs deleting.
2015-02-05 BIKERJ0HN Aggravation over losing rating points on the ELO Problems Seems to be due to internet connection issues...
2015-01-30 Corella Better link to games: http://www.pgnmentor.com/files.html#players
2015-01-30 Corella If you want to win against the chess engines here, try the Catalan, stone wall and run it out of time.

Done many times against higher rated engines.

Also this, a link: http://www.pgnmentor.com/files.html#openings

Interesting to view 'Tal' games with a chess engine.

You have misinterpretted my last comment.
If you say it is complex then forget about my 2nd to last comment.

2015-01-24 Datr The RD is variable for a reason, when a newcomer starts he has an ELO of 1500 and an RD of 350, The large RD cause large changes in their ratings, this means they can find their playing level after about 10 problems. If the RD was 30 at the start newcomers would have to endure a lot of problems that were not at their level either all too difficult or all too easy and this wouldn't be good for them, the same applies to problems, they soon find an appropriate level because of the variable RD. Variable RD is an inherent part of the Glicko rating system and I don't think it should be changed.
2015-01-23 N4pll To Datr and Zuril:
Let us use 30 as the RD for the rating points added on each problem.

2015-01-23 Franzc now i am at 1350. it's difficult come up to 1600
2015-01-23 Datr Franzc, you have to achieve an ELO of 1600 or more to be awarded voting rights.
2015-01-23 Franzc Intanto ringrazio per questo bellissimo sito Zuril. Non ho la possibilità di votare gli esercizi. Si può ripristinare?
2015-01-22 Datr Rating point change is quite a complex calculation, it depends on the player's rating and RD and the problem's rating and RD it would be too complicated to be meaningful for most players.
2015-01-22 Datr Zuril: This problem need deleting. t38052.
2015-01-22 N4pll Thank you Zuril for fixing my problem. :-)

I am curious about the number of points that someone gets on each problem.
For example, a problem that is exactly 400 rating points, you get one point.
If the problem has the same rating as your rating, then you get 9 points.
Now what is the rating range from 2 to 8 rating points added (if you get it correctly), between 1 and 400 points.
This should be posted in your forum.

Again thank you,
N4PLL
2015-01-01 Zuril Serene and peaceful New Year to all!
